So on Friday night, we went to a minor league hockey game. Hockey? What’s that you say? Yes, the hockey has ceased to exist for the most part this season, and it’s not that I’m a huge fan or anything, but I do enjoy going to the games. This game was for our hometown Admirals. They won 3-0, but the highlight of the evening were the two wicked fights we saw. Yes, I said wicked. The two Admirals players really cleaned the clocks of those filthy Binghamton Senators, and the local fans seemed to enjoy showing them their pleasure by holding up their thumb and index finder in an “L” shape. Who’s the real loser there?

And then of course the real sporting event of the weekend was the Super Bowl. I wasn’t really rooting for either team, but for some reason, I don’t want Philly teams to do well. I think it’s the fans. They are just downright awful, and don’t deserve to be happy. The game itself was pretty good, but the outcome is what I expected. The commercials were a bit lacking this year, but overall the game was enjoyable. Big ups to Greg’s mom for the best football food ever!

I had plans to go see the VT-Duke this past weekend, but I totally bailed when Ivan came up from the Gulf of Mexico and took dead aim at southwestern Virginia. So what happened then? A beautifully sunny day in Blacksburg, of course.

Well, to be fair, the drive over on Friday evening might have doomed me as there were a plethora of tornadoes all over the state and the weather was just downright nasty. It seems Ivan sped up and hurried across the state a little early, which made for a very nice game day.

Oh well. At least I got to watch the game with Bucky, and Monica and I were able to run some errands, as well as look at some futons (of which were planning on putting in the office). And we all had a kick-butt sushi dinner; I think we found our sushi place here.

On Sunday, I watched NFL while getting some much needed painting done. I hooked up a spare television in the garage, which enabled me to paint and watch at the same time. Awesome.

Of course, this was after I had to fix a leaky toilet. After a trip to Home Depot, I determined the mechanism inside the tank was put together improperly.

So to sum up, I missed a good Hokie win in person, but I was able to watch it on TV, then we had great sushi, then I got a lot of house-work done. Not a bad weekend after all.

So last weekend we went to Kings Dominion – my first time there in several years. There were alot of new rides since my last visit, and many shady characters threatened to derail our fun time, but overall, we had a very enjoyable experience.

Here are the rides that were “new” to me (all of which were my favorites).

Volcano
This was our first ride of the day, and now one of my favorite roller coasters. Not much else to say about it. Just ride it and enjoy.

Drop Zone
This ride looks very intimidating; it’s the tallest thing in the park. Just looking at it drop down repeatedly as you wait in line makes you think twice about what you’re about to do. Once you’re strapped in, it seems to keep rising until you think you’re on the way to the moon. Finally, it stops, and after a few seconds of holding your breath, you fall. Yes, the pucker factor is high on this one.

Hypersonic XLC
This is the ride that terrified Monica. Just ask her how she was feeling right before “launch”. Yes, this ride “launches” you at a high rate of speed until you’re perpindicular with the ground on your way up and back down towards the earth. I recommend riding this at night, as seeing nothing but a field of stars as you ascend the 90 degree incline is amazing.

Xtreme Sky Flyer
Monica had to talk me into this one. This ride says it combines the feelings of bungee-jumping with skydiving. You step into a harness, get strapped to a cable, get hoisted up way higher than any human should be, and then free-fall into a pendulum-like swinging motion over the people below. I was really nervous about this one, and I’ve never been more scared as when we were dangling 150 feet above the ground waiting to cheat death, but I have to say I really enjoyed it. Now Monica is trying to talk me into doing that bungee-jumping.

This past weekend, a monumental moment occurred in Monica’s life.

She played putt-putt golf for the very first time.

I can hear the collective “Whaaaa?” as you read this. Yes, it is possible for someone to get past the age of ten and not have played putt-putt golf. How does this happen? How can someone’s childhood be devoid of the joy of hitting a nicked-up golf ball through windmills, around alligators, and other seemingly insurmountable, wacky obstacles?

You got me.

I won’t divulge her score here, but it actually wasn’t that bad despite the rain that tried to dampen our golfing spirits. I actually played one of the best games of my life, not that I keep track of all my putt-putt outings. :)

Ah, what a relaxing weekend. We slept ALOT Saturday and Sunday. Didn’t really plan on it; it just sort of happened. We had caught up on some errands already so we didn’t have a whole lot to do outside of the house.

On Friday evening, we tested our acting skills by playing Mary and Joseph in a live nativity at our church. Not really much acting involved, but we did have to wear the appropriate Biblical attire and stand outside in the cold in a manger with some animals. It was actually quite fun as alot of people came by with their kids and got to learn the real meaning of Christmas. There were five scenes in all from shepherds to wisemen to baby Jesus, and there were some pictures that were taken so I’ll try to post those when I get them.

Too bad the firemen at the station next door decided to spray their hoses all over the field where we set up the scenes.

On Saturday evening, we went to the see The Nutcracker performed by the Washington Ballet at the Warner Theatre. Now, I’m not into the whole ballet thing usually, but the story and music of the Nutcracker just fits with Christmas. I’m sure everyone is at least familiar with the music as it’s played in countless commercials. I remember watching filmstrips in grade school; the kind where still shots of drawings are projected onto a screen while the music plays and the narrator tells the story, and there are occasional beeps to tell you to advance to the next frame. Do they still show these in school?

Anyway, we had a really good time there. It wasn’t quite as eventful as the last time we went two years ago when there was nudity and sugar plums wrapped around people’s heads. :)

On Sunday, we had another snowstorm hit us. That makes two in two weeks and it’s not even winter yet! We received about three or four inches I’d say, but the temperature rose a bit, and it started raining, and the snow turned to slush so it wasn’t that bad. Of course, it all froze over on Sunday night.

So to sum up, living nativities are fun, the nutcracker is cool, and snow is plentiful. Oh and just in case you didn’t read my last message (and you’ve been in a cave)…we got him!

Brian and I had a really good weekend. Friday night, our neighbor Cathy, Brian and I sat in front of our house eating pizza and handing out candy to the 20 kids that showed up trick or treating.

Saturday we went Christmas shopping…yes, you read correctly! It was about a 6 hour adventure walking in and out of stores with our little list and as tiring as it all is, we had fun. We left the mall, had dinner and made it home just in time to catch the Hokies play a great game against Miami.

Every Sunday after church, Brian is all about the football, so I did what any wife would do…I went shopping. Because we had such great weather, we were able to grill our dinner and pretend it was still summer outside. That concludes my weekend update. Happy Monday!

This past weekend was Fall Alumni Weekend for the fraternity, and we had a blast.

Went down early on Thursday night, then got up Friday morning to check out the downtown area and eat some lunch at one of the old hangouts. It’s really changed since I graduated. The highlight of the afternoon was seeing the Hokiebird with a pair of thong panties on his head. Quite the picture.

By the time Friday evening rolled around, the place where we were staying (the Thieses’ house) was starting to resemble a bad reality show – like Big Brother on crack. A total of eighteen people, two infants, and one dog crammed into a townhouse that normally fits five. The problem was we couldn’t kick anybody out.

Woke up early on Saturday morning to start tailgating for the VT-Syracuse game around 10 AM. Lots of hotdogs and bratwurst were cooked on the grill before we headed over to the stadium to watch Tech open a can of you know what on Cuse. The Hokies were really firing on all cylinders. What a great game!

We enjoyed the party at the fraternity house for awhile on Saturday night, but what really made it all worthwhile was enjoying the brand new hot tub back at the Thieses’ place. Man, I got to get me one of those.

Thanks for the putting up with us, Kim and Jason!

It’s hard to believe that Monday is here again. This weekend, my mom, Julia, came to visit from NY, and it was great to have her around for a couple of days. We love to chat, shop, gossip and munch on some really good Puerto Rican food together. Brian likes my mom’s visits because she keeps me busy and he can watch all one hundred thousand hours of football without me disturbing him.

Thanks for the visit mom! We love you and can’t wait to see you again!

When you think of a redneck, one of the things that ultimately pops into your mind is NASCAR. Lots of guys racing around constantly making left turns.

Yeah, lots of excitement.

So with that mind, we ventured last Friday down to Richmond to see the NASCAR Busch Series Funai 250, and you know what? It was actually fun.

I never knew that NASCAR races were so loud that you needed to wear ear plugs. You can also rent headsets to listen to your favorite driver communicating with his pit crew all through the race. And you really don’t get an appreciation for how fast they are actually moving until you’re standing next to the track; you just don’t get that feeling on TV.

The most exciting part is the crashes and the ensuing race for first place that occurs after the yellow flag-waving is replaced with a green one. There was even a red flag that occured (which stops the race completely) due to a messy crash that occured about five laps before the end of the race, I assume so as not to end the race under a yellow flag (in which all drivers must drive slowly and maintain their position).

The last three laps were definitely the most thrilling as the first two cars bumped into each other producing alot of smoke (from the tires) and making everyone think that they were going to crash. The driver in third ended up rear-ending the driver in second which caused him to spin out. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but the driver in second surely thought so and drove up next to the other driver in the pit after the race to give him a piece of his mind.

So while we’re not exactly NASCAR fanatics now, we can certainly appreciate it as a sport and wouldn’t mind going to another race.

Monica’s family will be happy to know that she is the first Puerto Rican redneck. :)

Ok, so the gallery is fixed now. Seems I floogled something during the upgrade process and not everything was copied over correctly. Thanks to the folks over on the discussion forums at the gallery for helping me debug the problem. Oh, and I just made up the word “floogled”.

I added a wedding day countdown over on the ride side…something Monica has been bugging me to do for a long time. At least you’ll have a few weeks watching it count down.

Didn’t do a whole lot this weekend. I went to an alumni board meeting yesterday while Monica relaxed at home. Yesterday evening we went to the Taste of the Town, a food festival where you can sample the cuisine from local restaurants. Luckily the rain held off and we were able to eat alot of good food (although the plate from Trader Joe’s was disgusting).

We relaxed more today. Grilled out some tuna steaks on our still new grill, and they were delicious. Maybe we should have set up our own booth yesterday.
