11 for 11.

Tied with Ben Hur and Titanic.

Wow.

What an amazing display of respect and honor for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at the Academy Awards last night. The movie was just showered with awards all night long, and deservedly so.

It won in the expected catagories such as Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, and Best Special Effects, although I can’t fathom why it wasn’t even nominated for Best Cinematography. The sweet wins were for Best Score (I can’t stop listening to this song), Best Song (I can’t stop listening to this either, actually all three scores), Best Director, and Best Motion Picture. For such a diminutive man, Peter Jackson made such a grand trilogy. Too bad none of the actors were nominated for anything; half of them deserved an award more than the pompous Sean Penn.

All in all, it was a very subdued evening, politically speaking. There were only two guys who couldn’t keep their opinions to themselves, and even they weren’t obnoxious about it.

Rise and shine, campers, and don’t forget your booties ’cause it’s cooooooold out there today!

The groundhog says six more weeks of winter.

Wonderful.

More sleet and snow is on the way tonight.

Wonderful.

I normally like winter, and it’s great to have it all wintry for Christmas. But just like last winter, it’s getting to be a bit much now. We’ve had to put up with weeks of twenty degree weather and snow that just won’t go away. The best part of the whole season is it gives me an excuse to watch one of the greatest movies of all time.

Well what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn’t one today!

The nominations are in.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King did very well. :)

I think the biggest shocker is that Cold Mountain did not get a Best Picture nomination. I haven’t seen this film, but it was getting rave reviews so I figured it was a lock for a nomination. The Civil War scenes from this movie really intrigue me, but that’s about it.

Actually, I’ve only seen one of the nominations for Best Picture; I’ve usually seen at least two of them. Monica saw Sea Biscuit, and we have been wanting to see Lost in Translation. I have no desire to see Mystic River, and I’ll probably catch Master and Commander on HBO at some point.

I was also shocked to see that ROTK wasn’t nominated for Cinematography. I mean, you’re telling me Sea Biscuit is more cinematic than ROTK? Give me a break. :whocares:

ROTK should run away with every category in which it’s nominated, especially score and song. If you haven’t listened to the wonderful music from this movie, I highly recommend it. I was just listening to it again last night, and I can’t get enough of it.

Oh, and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) did NOT get nominated. Oh well.

Simply incredible.

That’s my review for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. All three movies of the trilogy are fantastic, but this one really tops them all. There are some of the best epic battle scenes I’ve ever seen on film, and once the movie gets going, the three plus hours really scream by. I did think the pacing at first was a little slow, and the movie tries to end itself several times, but I’m sure once I see it again, and I get my head wrapped around everything there was to soak in, I’ll be able to give a better critique. I wasn’t one of the brave souls who dared to sit their butt in a theater seat for thirteen straight hours to watch the three films back to back to back, but dare I say it might have just been worth it do just that.

Now, to some, what I’m about to say is blasphemous.

I’ve never read the books.

Why? I was just never exposed to them up until I started hearing about the movies a few years ago. In fact, I never really read books for leisure until I started traveling for work. Hey, reading is fundamental.

Now, I’m inclined to read them, if only to delve more into the world that Peter Jackson created for the movies (maybe I’ll start after I finish my current book). I know there were some things left out in order to have a better flow, so I’m interested in more detail behind the story that I already know.

One more thing – Samwise Gamgee is my new favorite Rings character, and Sean Astin richly deserves an Oscar nomination, if not the Academy Award itself. And isn’t it about time one of these movies won Best Picture?

Have you seen it yet? What did you think?

So we’ve seen two movies recently. One, the last part of a much-hyped trilogy and the other, another clone of those ever popular British-romantic comedies. No, the second one was not my choice.

If you haven’t guessed already, the first movie I’m talking about is Matrix Revolutions. Everyone’s been waiting since the spring to see how this story was going to end, and there’s been much speculation about Neo and the gang and just how the heck did Neo control those machines outside of the matrix at the end of Reloaded. I had avoided the spoilers as I wanted to be surprised in the theater. So what did I think?

Eh, it was ok.

I’m not going to spoil anything here for those that haven’t seen it, but feel free to discuss anything in the comments. Basically, not all of my questions were answered. I understand that some things are ok left unsaid, but, come on, you have to explain some stuff.

Now, onto that other movie I mentioned earlier. It was called Love Actually, and Monica loved it. So what did I think?

Eh, it was ok.

I can’t believe I just had the same response to Matrix Revolutions and Love Actually. The movie was enjoyable on some levels which means it wasn’t totally awful. What more can you ask from a movie today? There aren’t many movies that really blow you away anymore, so if you feel as if you didn’t waste your time or money, I say you’re coming out ahead. I don’t plan on making it a habit of seeing these types of movies though. ;)

I just googled for something and saw that it’s the birthday of one of my favorite directors: Alfred Hitchcock. You may know (or maybe you don’t) that Monica and I are really nostalgic for nostalgia, and old movies really fuel those feelings.

If you haven’t seen any Hitchcock films, I highly suggest starting with this one.

And by the way, all of the honeymoon photos are up now. Next up, more reception pics.

I forget to mention yesterday that we saw The Hulk. Monica totally did not want to see it and was convinced it was going to suck, but I “twisted her arm”.

So maybe she was right.

I mean, it was a decent movie, but I don’t think the acting was very good (what was Nick Nolte doing?), and it was a bit slow in some parts. The action scenes were very good though. I guess I’ll have to think about it some more. Who would have thought the Hulk would have a tough time with a poodle?

One more thing. Our friend, Mike, had surgery last week, and we just wanted to tell him to get well soon. So…uh…get well soon, Mike!

Holy cow! This would be so cool!

I just hope they use the characters and storyline from the old ’80s cartoon and not from the crappy new ones.

I thought the trailer for this movie looked cool…

…until I saw the trailer for this movie.

Wow.

More changes to the site. I started Jack’s page, but there isn’t much on it right now. Added some “Items of Interest” on the right side of the front page. I’ve also added some pages so you can see previous movies and dvds that we’ve seen. Let me know what you think of the changes.

Didn’t do much today. Just finished watching Vick lose to the Eagles. Too bad, but I have a feeling he’ll see better days in the years ahead. Another controversial finish earlier today in the Steelers-Titans game, but I think it was the right call. Should be interesting to see how the NFL responds this time and to see if they fine Bill Cowher.

Saw Catch Me If You Can today. Very good movie. I enjoyed it alot. It was better than Cats.
