Well, no parade for us this morning. I got up at 5 am to check the weather, and it was pouring down rain with no end in site. There was still a question as to whether they would fly the balloons or not; they finally made the call to fly them at 8:30 am, albeit barely above street level.

Oh well. I was really looking forward to it, but we’ll have to check it out another year. More importantly, we’re very thankful to be nice and warm with family preparing a Thanksgiving feast, while other family is safe and sound in other states preparing their own meals. And most importantly, we’re thankful for a loving God who has provided all of this for us.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Eleven hours later and we finally arrive in New York. This was one of the worst drives we’ve experienced in recent memory. Here’s what we encountered:

  • windy and rainy conditions in southern VA
  • an accident in Northern VA
  • rush hour in in Northern VA
  • an accident in MD
  • three of four lanes closed in DE
  • two lanes closed on the George Washington bridge

Who ever decided to close the lanes in DE and NY needs to go to that special part of hell that no one really knows about. I mean seriously, are they smoking crack or something? Closing lanes during the busiest travel time of the year? Who are these people?

Anyway, we’re here. And now to top it all off, there’s supposed to be the worst weather in the history of the world for the parade tomorrow, so it’s not looking as if we’ll make the trip downtown.

But really, I’m very thankful for everything I have. Right?

We’re off to New York to spend Thanksgiving with Monica’s family. We’re going to attempt to go the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday. Neither of us (or anyone in Monica’s family) has been previously so we’re not sure what to expect as far as crowds and such, but I think being there in person should be awesome. I’ll try to post some pictures afterwards and maybe even moblog some stuff during the event so check back to see some really big balloons.

Call me crazy but I’m already thinking about listening to Christmas music. The general rule says you’re not supposed to start listening until after Thanksgiving. I don’t know why I want to listen already, but I’m just in the mood.

Not to mention that because we have so many Christmas movies and TV specials, we have to start watching them now so we can finish before December 25th.

So here it is, November 14th, and I’m going to start listening to Christmas music and watching Christmas shows. Is that so bad?

We went to two pumpkin carving parties last weekend, and here’s what we have to show for it.

Pretty sweet if you ask me. I had always done the free hand thing previously, you know, the old school pumpkin face that Lucy draws on Charlie Brown’s head. This year we actually bought a pumpkin carving kit and used the drawings in the book. Kind of felt like cheating, but the results were really good.

We’re ringing in the New Year with family here in New York while checking out the Times Square web cams.

We’re heading home tomorrow. It was a great time in New York this holiday season. It’s always great to get home (especially because we miss Jack!), but we’ll certainly miss spending time with the family.

Happy New Year, everyone!

We went downtown today to see all of the Christmas decorations at the various spots: Macy’s, Rockefeller Center, Lord & Taylor, Sax 5th Ave, etc. I took a ton of photos which I’ll put on the site when we get back.

Tomorrow we’re heading back down there to do some shopping after we make an appearance on the Fox News show Dayside. It airs live at 1 pm tomorrow (Tuesday) so be sure to tune in!

Well, we are in the middle of a very good Christmas here in New York. We exchanged gifts already, and now we’re just relaxing and drinking some coffee while listening to Christmas music and watching some television.

The weather isn’t very Christmasy right now – lots of rain. Having spoken with friends and family from different parts of the country to wish them a Merry Christmas, it’s apparently raining everywhere.

We hope you are able to reflect on why we celebrate this holiday:

1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

We made the trip up to New York yesterday for the holidays. Let me tell you, leaving at 4:30 am is not fun, but we avoided most of the traffic…that is until we reached the George Washington bridge. Now we’re hanging out with Monica’s family waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

Pretty busy week for us.

On Monday, Monica and I attended a luncheon for my Mom’s retirement. There’s not too many photos here yet, but there will be as soon as I get the pics from my Mom’s camera. We ate lunch at the Olive Garden and my Mom had to give a speech (she did a great job). It was really nice hearing her coworkers laud her with compliments, and her boss presented her with a few gifts and awards. On Tuesday, an admiral presented her with several awards from the Navy.

On Friday, Monica and I attended a luncheon for Marlene’s retirement luncheon. We ate lunch at the Marriott, and then listened as coworkers and bosses of Marlene told us what a pleasure it was to work with her. The special agent in charge of the Norfolk field office presented her with several gifts and awards, and then friends and family gathered at her home to enjoy food and drink while celebrating Marlene’s retirement.

On Saturday, Monica and I headed off to Williamsburg once again to check out the Christmas decorations. We bundled up as it was a bit cold, and the town was decorated very nicely, if a little subdued (just as it was back in colonial times). We even got to meet Thomas Jefferson.

Today, we joined my family at my Mom’s house to celebrate Christmas because we will be with Monica’s family in New York on Christmas Day. I’m still full from all the food I ate, and everyone was more than generous in their gifts. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful family.

Now it’s time to relax and go back to work.
