Ugh

I think the thing that hurts the most is the way we lost today. I was worried after our performance last week, and it turns out for good reason. This was a winnable game for us, and our defense blew it in the first ten minutes.

After the first quarter, we pretty much held the Ga Tech offense in check, especially Calvin Johnson. Our offense had some issues, especially protecting Glennon, but there were a few bright spots, and we really moved the ball well at times. Glennon held onto the ball too long a couple of times which is something that comes with experience, and Ore needs to work on his blocking, but our receivers made some great plays. Our offensive line on the other hand was just atrocious; Glennon’s blindside can attest to that.

Of course, there were a couple of dropped passes that would have changed the course of the game. We seemed to forget how to tackle at times, and what the heck was up with our special teams? We aren’t supposed to lose games like that.

I think Glennon will learn alot from this game which will help him later this season when we face BC, Miami, and Clemson. Those games will be dogfights just as tough as today, if not tougher, and hopefully we’ll have a few breaks our way. We certainly didn’t have them today.

Pretty lackluster first half for the Hokies today, the blocked punt for a safety aside. The defense really let us down, and the offensive line wasn’t playing very well.

Beamer & Co really made just adjustments at halftime though as we played much better in the second half. The defense played better, and Ore just went off.

As we get into the heavy part of our ACC schedule (read Ga Tech next week), we’re going to have to lean on Ore if we’re going to do anything on offense. If he plays well, things will really open up for Glennon and our great wide receivers so they can make some plays. And it goes without saying (which is why I’ll say it) that our defense really needs to play top notch football if we’re going to have a chance.

I can easily see us losing at least two of our four games against Ga Tech, BC, Clemson, and Miami.

We’re going to get a nasty reputation if we keep doing stupid things again and again. I know it’s getting extra attention from the administration because of Marcus, and because of that Weaver felt he had to act. I honestly believe that without the prior incidents, Weaver would have probably done nothing.

And what’s up with our sorry schedule for next season?

I guess maybe deep down, we had all seen this coming – one of those scenarios you thought about but hoped would never happen.

Marcus, I think you have a lot of growing up to do. You’ve got some character flaws that unfortunately manifested themselves on the field and in other places. I don’t think it was just your brother’s money, but maybe that’s partly to blame. The only person you can really blame is yourself.

I know Beamer had a lot of faith in you as did I’m sure the rest of the coaching staff, and you let them down. If you take anything from this, I hope that you realize that there are consequences for actions.

I’m sure some team will draft you, and in a few years you may even end up with a multi-million dollar contract. You’ll be getting paid for what many people would love to do; it’ll just take you quite a bit longer than if you had done the right thing and stayed straight in school.

I don’t think most Hokie fans hate you for what you’ve done. You really showed some flashes of brilliance in your play this past season, but I think most people are just really disappointed. We were more than willing to give you a second chance, and understood your frustration on the field in the West Virginia game when their fans were taunting you relentlessly. Many of us even stuck up for you when fans from other schools put you down.

But that dumb play in the Gator Bowl was the turning point. I think once most fans heard about your speeding ticket and subsequent arrest, they knew the writing was on the wall.

And so your chapter at Tech comes to a close. An eleven win season is something to be very proud of; your actions are not. Marcus, I wish you the best in your NFL career.

Who knows, maybe there will be an all Vick Super Bowl one day. :)

Update: I’m starting to doubt now whether an NFL team will want to take a risk on Marcus with him continuing to do very stupid things.

It seems a little weird to call today Pearl Harbor Day. I mean, we don’t call 9/11 Twin Towers Day or Pentagon Day. It’s been so long since 1941 that most people can’t really relate to what Americans went through back then, but there are the inevitable comparisons to 9/11, so I imagine most people were pretty upset. When you read about how events transpired though, you realize that most people didn’t really understand the extent of attack until almost a year later when photos and full accounts of that day appeared in newspapers across the country.

A very good book to read on this subject is game of which we shall not speak ever again, and then the most unlikely of endings. Let the suck-fest continue.

Monica and I are sick once again, and it’s due to us volunteering to watch the toddler class at church. Those kids are little germ factories, and they must have been in high production for us.

We were still able to decorate the house for Christmas and enjoy the Hokies big win over UNC to clinch a spot in the ACC championship game.

Anyone venture out on Black Friday? Not a chance here. I know there were some good deals, but man, who wants to deal with this?

Wow, what a stunning turn of events yesterday. First Tech destroyed UVA, and then Georgia Tech upsets Miami to give us the inside track on a BCS bowl. Like the Circuit City commercials, it was just what we needed. How did we lose to this team?

Despite this being my favorite time of the year, I’ve decided I hate all trees and their dead leaves that rain down on our yard. They sure are pretty to look at, but then they taunt you with their maroon and orange colors and loud crunching noise so that even our dog is afraid to walk on the huge pile right outside our back door on his way to the bathroom. All of a sudden, I’m a huge fan of evergreens.

Went spent the past weekend in good ol’ Blacksburg. I even had a chance to take a couple of shots for the moblog.

Had a great dinner at Mike’s Grill on Friday and lunch at Sharkey’s and dinner at Bogen’s on Saturday which is a record restaurant turn-out for us. I always try to hit some of the old places to get some that good grub that I can’t get anywhere else.

Hung out with some old friends and went to the Hokies spring football game on Saturday afternoon. Marcus Vick looked decent, but it’s hard to tell much when play stops as soon as someone lays a hand on you. Of course, that didn’t stop Glennon from looking awful with three interceptions and cementing his back-up QB spot. The defense shined as usual.

The ride back is always long, but it’s even longer since we moved. We still had a great time though, and now I can’t wait for football season to start.

Boy, my NCAA tournament bracket is really taking a beating. Tons of big upsets this year, but my final four are still alive (although Wake Forest is about to lose in double overtime). If I ever win a pool, I think it will be a sign of the end times.

And the Hokies got smoked today in the second round of the NIT. Suckage all around.

I’m sitting here listening to the VT-Temple NIT game on the computer since it’s only on ESPNU; we don’t get that channel (yet). It’s the second half and the Hokies are up by seven in Blacksburg.

Man, it sure brings back memories of the last second Tech win over New Mexico State in 1995. Storming the court is fun.

I hope the Hokies can hold on tonight and advance. Finishing fourth in the ACC and making it to the postseason isn’t bad for our first season in the best basketball conference in the land.

Update: and the Hokies take it 60-50; the first win ever over Temple. Woohoo!
