When you think of a redneck, one of the things that ultimately pops into your mind is NASCAR. Lots of guys racing around constantly making left turns.

Yeah, lots of excitement.

So with that mind, we ventured last Friday down to Richmond to see the NASCAR Busch Series Funai 250, and you know what? It was actually fun.

I never knew that NASCAR races were so loud that you needed to wear ear plugs. You can also rent headsets to listen to your favorite driver communicating with his pit crew all through the race. And you really don’t get an appreciation for how fast they are actually moving until you’re standing next to the track; you just don’t get that feeling on TV.

The most exciting part is the crashes and the ensuing race for first place that occurs after the yellow flag-waving is replaced with a green one. There was even a red flag that occured (which stops the race completely) due to a messy crash that occured about five laps before the end of the race, I assume so as not to end the race under a yellow flag (in which all drivers must drive slowly and maintain their position).

The last three laps were definitely the most thrilling as the first two cars bumped into each other producing alot of smoke (from the tires) and making everyone think that they were going to crash. The driver in third ended up rear-ending the driver in second which caused him to spin out. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but the driver in second surely thought so and drove up next to the other driver in the pit after the race to give him a piece of his mind.

So while we’re not exactly NASCAR fanatics now, we can certainly appreciate it as a sport and wouldn’t mind going to another race.

Monica’s family will be happy to know that she is the first Puerto Rican redneck. :)

…go out to our friends, Tanya, Mike, and Bucky.

Happy Birthday, guys!

(I know it’s not as big as Monica’s birthday wish, but she is my wife. :p)

I left for Chicago last Thursday a little apprehensive as to what might happen at one of our most hectic meetings of the year. Although, the meeting was in fact really hectic and tiresome, I cannot believe everything that happened to everyone I know while I was away.

As soon as I get to Chicago, I get a phone call from Brian telling me that New York is without power and all I could think about was my brother. Fortunately for my mom, she was and still is in Puerto Rico, so she missed the whole thing. After a couple of hours of trying to reach my brother, he finally calls me and lets me know that he will be stuck at work and will sleep under his desk as he has no way of getting home. After this phone call, my mom calls to tell me that she is very worried about my brother and also told me that she had some kind of food poisoning and was more than sick. After this phone call from my mom, I get another phone call from Brian telling me that his dad needed emergency surgery and he was going home to be with him….at this point I had been gone for about 8 hours. I could not believe it!! Brian also hurt one of his knees and my friend Laura broke her nose in a Brady Bunch-like accident with a softball.

I am happy to report that my brother finally got home 30 hours later, my mom got over her food poisoning, Brian’s father is doing well, Brian’s knee is expected to be fine and Laura says that her nose is expected to make a full recovery.

I turn my back for a second and everything just goes all crazy! Lucky for all of you, I am back now. There is something to say about having me around.

We headed down to Palmyra (just outside of Charlottesville) to hang out with some friends for the Fourth of July. Thanks to the Samples for hosting the shindig and proving some good eats.

We grilled some food, drank some beers, and had a good time; we even had a rousing discussion about health care, terrorists, the Civil War, and the Constitution (thanks Munch).

In the evening, we walked down to Lake Monticello to watch the fireworks. Check out the pictures and movies.

I forget to mention yesterday that we saw The Hulk. Monica totally did not want to see it and was convinced it was going to suck, but I “twisted her arm”.

So maybe she was right.

I mean, it was a decent movie, but I don’t think the acting was very good (what was Nick Nolte doing?), and it was a bit slow in some parts. The action scenes were very good though. I guess I’ll have to think about it some more. Who would have thought the Hulk would have a tough time with a poodle?

One more thing. Our friend, Mike, had surgery last week, and we just wanted to tell him to get well soon. So…uh…get well soon, Mike!

So we were invited to an Emmy Lou Harris concert last night by our friends, Mike and Laura and also joined by Steve and Amy. Country folk music hasn’t been our style of music in the past, but we decided to broaden our horizons and give it a shot.

It was surprisingly good. She has a very good voice and, backed by a very good band, put on a great show. She played for about two and a half hours, only interrupted by a brief intermission and what turned out to be an intense storm. Dark clouds rolled in during her first set followed by gusts of wind and torrential rains. Everyone on the lawn section at Wolf Trap went scattering either from getting wet or fear of getting struck by the frequent lightning and thunder. We were protected in our seats by the roof, but as the rains and winds kept up, the whole theater was filled with a mist, and Emmy Lou kept right on playing throughout and made for a unique experience. Quite the show.

Thanks to Mike and Laura for providing some great Thai food and to Steve and Amy for the tasty chips and drinks, all of which we enjoyed while sitting on the lawn before the show. Sorry that our cookies weren’t that good. We promise to get you a good macaroon, Mike.

So we’re heading out of town this weekend, making the trek down to Hampton Roads to see some family and friends. We were originally going to the beach on Saturday, but the weather doesn’t look as if it’s going to cooperate.

But we are going to Busch Gardens with our friend, Bucky, on Sunday. Hopefully the threat of rain will drive everyone else away so we can ride Lochness and Alpengiest over and over again! :scared:

Then on Monday, we’ll be back up here for the holiday and have a little shindig at our friends’, the Chengs.

And on Memorial Day, take some time out to say a prayer and remember those who made the greatest sacrifice for our country.

This message is to wish our friends Mark and Lorena a safe trip. Today, they start their long drive to Oklahoma to visit family before heading to Hawaii where they will be stationed for 3 years. Mark is in the good ol’ Air Force.

I miss them already, but look forward to seeing them when Brian and I go to Hawaii in July.

Mark and Lorena, have a great trip and we hope to hear from you soon!!

Well, I have to say that Brian and I had a great weekend. We shoveled lots and lots of dirt Saturday while helping our friends, Mike and Laura, landscape their backyard. You might wonder what’s so great about shoveling dirt. Well, while shoveling I was NOT DOING ANY WEDDING STUFF!!! Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to my wedding very much, but I am a little tired of putting it together. I thank Brian for the endless amount of patience he has as he listens to me scream, cry, babble and fight about the wonderful, blessed event. Brian, you are the best.

After attending Easter service, Brian and I along with a couple of friends from church decided to spend some time at a wonderful place we call Starbucks. It all turned ugly when Mike proceeded to say that baseball was boring and he prefers watching the EXCITING game of golf. As a Yankees fan I find that completely crazy…then it got worse. His wife, Laura, proceeded to say that the Yankees look dirty and mean. What is she thinking? Next time, I will make sure to have my vaseline ready! GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!

We received this picture from our friend, Kim, today, and we love it. We’re not sure there’s such a thing as the Easter fairy, but if there is, we don’t think it could look any cuter then this.

Happy Easter, Katie!
