So, yes, it’s been awhile since I posted on here. Not sure why, but I just haven’t felt like writing anything. Sometimes I used to feel like I had to write these mini-essays about whatever was on my mind, and at times I wrote some really stupid stuff just because I thought I had to. I’ll probably still do that, but I’ll do my best to make it somewhat entertaining. :)

What have I missed since January?

  • The Super Bowl – The game was good; the commercials were terrible.
  • birthday – My Dad turned 65 on February 11. He can stop singing that Beatles song now. Happy very belated birthday, Dad!
  • Valentine’s Day – I bought Monica an iPod; she was very happy which means I was very happy.
  • DIY – We ripped up the vinyl flooring in our foyer and kitchen (NOT fun at all) and installed ceramic tile (actually not that difficult); it looks really good now even though I have a couple of things I still need to do to finish. I’ll post pictures showing our progress soon.
  • the Oscars – I convinced myself not to watch this year but I did anyway. Hooray for will-power. Really a boring show even though John Stewart was mildly humorous. George Clooney is better than the rest of America, and he knows it.
  • friends – Steve and Tanya held their engagement party in Richmond; we attended and had a great time. Congrats, guys!
  • madness – My NCAA basketball bracket is in flames for another year. I think next year I’m going to get Jack to make my picks because I can’t seem to fill out a good bracket to save my life.
  • wireless – Monica and I both upgraded our mobile phones. Yes, we gave into the marketing hype and are now proud owners of a couple of PEBLs. We got an awesome deal at CompUSA which even included a free Bluetooth headset. I’m in the process of modding them, but since they’re so new, there’s not a whole lot of information about that yet.
  • I’m sure there’s other stuff that I’ve forgotten that I failed to mention. Anyway, I’m back. I didn’t really go anywhere, but you know what I mean. Okay, back to watching basketball.

Wow, some great NFL playoff games today. It reminded me that I hadn’t posted yet about my performance in my fantasy football leagues this year.

In the league that a friend of mine runs, my team, Feats of Strength, wasn’t so hot. My draft was poor, and my players really underperformed (when they weren’t injured). I ended up 9-9 and out of the playoffs. Unfortunately, this is a keeper league, and my prospects for improving next season don’t look good right now. :(

In the league that I run, my team, More Cowbell, started strong and finished strong. As a matter of fact, this was probably my best team ever as my draft was killer. Having the number one quarterback, running back, and wide receiver on one team is usually unheard of, but I had them. Even after the number one QB (McNabb) went down for the season, I had the number two QB (Palmer) sitting on the bench to take his place. I could do no wrong, and it paid off with a another championship…a repeat championship as a matter of fact. My record was 11-3, and I just dominated in the playoffs. Can I make it a three-peat next season? ;)

I guess maybe deep down, we had all seen this coming – one of those scenarios you thought about but hoped would never happen.

Marcus, I think you have a lot of growing up to do. You’ve got some character flaws that unfortunately manifested themselves on the field and in other places. I don’t think it was just your brother’s money, but maybe that’s partly to blame. The only person you can really blame is yourself.

I know Beamer had a lot of faith in you as did I’m sure the rest of the coaching staff, and you let them down. If you take anything from this, I hope that you realize that there are consequences for actions.

I’m sure some team will draft you, and in a few years you may even end up with a multi-million dollar contract. You’ll be getting paid for what many people would love to do; it’ll just take you quite a bit longer than if you had done the right thing and stayed straight in school.

I don’t think most Hokie fans hate you for what you’ve done. You really showed some flashes of brilliance in your play this past season, but I think most people are just really disappointed. We were more than willing to give you a second chance, and understood your frustration on the field in the West Virginia game when their fans were taunting you relentlessly. Many of us even stuck up for you when fans from other schools put you down.

But that dumb play in the Gator Bowl was the turning point. I think once most fans heard about your speeding ticket and subsequent arrest, they knew the writing was on the wall.

And so your chapter at Tech comes to a close. An eleven win season is something to be very proud of; your actions are not. Marcus, I wish you the best in your NFL career.

Who knows, maybe there will be an all Vick Super Bowl one day. :)

Update: I’m starting to doubt now whether an NFL team will want to take a risk on Marcus with him continuing to do very stupid things.

It seems a little weird to call today Pearl Harbor Day. I mean, we don’t call 9/11 Twin Towers Day or Pentagon Day. It’s been so long since 1941 that most people can’t really relate to what Americans went through back then, but there are the inevitable comparisons to 9/11, so I imagine most people were pretty upset. When you read about how events transpired though, you realize that most people didn’t really understand the extent of attack until almost a year later when photos and full accounts of that day appeared in newspapers across the country.

A very good book to read on this subject is game of which we shall not speak ever again, and then the most unlikely of endings. Let the suck-fest continue.

Monica and I are sick once again, and it’s due to us volunteering to watch the toddler class at church. Those kids are little germ factories, and they must have been in high production for us.

We were still able to decorate the house for Christmas and enjoy the Hokies big win over UNC to clinch a spot in the ACC championship game.

Anyone venture out on Black Friday? Not a chance here. I know there were some good deals, but man, who wants to deal with this?

Wow, what a stunning turn of events yesterday. First Tech destroyed UVA, and then Georgia Tech upsets Miami to give us the inside track on a BCS bowl. Like the Circuit City commercials, it was just what we needed. How did we lose to this team?

Despite this being my favorite time of the year, I’ve decided I hate all trees and their dead leaves that rain down on our yard. They sure are pretty to look at, but then they taunt you with their maroon and orange colors and loud crunching noise so that even our dog is afraid to walk on the huge pile right outside our back door on his way to the bathroom. All of a sudden, I’m a huge fan of evergreens.

Monica wanted me to share this bit of news regarding a little tidbit I found on vartv.com last week.

// Football net coming to Cox

Cox Communications Hampton Roads has announced that the National Football League’s NFL Network is coming to it’s Hampton Roads cable system. The net will be added to Cox’s Digital Cable Sports & Information Tier on channel 224 on July 14th….. (6/14/05)

She is so excited about it!

Went spent the past weekend in good ol’ Blacksburg. I even had a chance to take a couple of shots for the moblog.

Had a great dinner at Mike’s Grill on Friday and lunch at Sharkey’s and dinner at Bogen’s on Saturday which is a record restaurant turn-out for us. I always try to hit some of the old places to get some that good grub that I can’t get anywhere else.

Hung out with some old friends and went to the Hokies spring football game on Saturday afternoon. Marcus Vick looked decent, but it’s hard to tell much when play stops as soon as someone lays a hand on you. Of course, that didn’t stop Glennon from looking awful with three interceptions and cementing his back-up QB spot. The defense shined as usual.

The ride back is always long, but it’s even longer since we moved. We still had a great time though, and now I can’t wait for football season to start.

So on Friday night, we went to a minor league hockey game. Hockey? What’s that you say? Yes, the hockey has ceased to exist for the most part this season, and it’s not that I’m a huge fan or anything, but I do enjoy going to the games. This game was for our hometown Admirals. They won 3-0, but the highlight of the evening were the two wicked fights we saw. Yes, I said wicked. The two Admirals players really cleaned the clocks of those filthy Binghamton Senators, and the local fans seemed to enjoy showing them their pleasure by holding up their thumb and index finder in an “L” shape. Who’s the real loser there?

And then of course the real sporting event of the weekend was the Super Bowl. I wasn’t really rooting for either team, but for some reason, I don’t want Philly teams to do well. I think it’s the fans. They are just downright awful, and don’t deserve to be happy. The game itself was pretty good, but the outcome is what I expected. The commercials were a bit lacking this year, but overall the game was enjoyable. Big ups to Greg’s mom for the best football food ever!

Didn’t do a whole lot this weekend as I’m recovering from my cold. I’m slowly feeling better, and I think my veins are pumping Robitussin now.

Been watching some good NFL playoff action today. Too bad the blizzard didn’t hit today instead of yesterday because that would have made these games even more fun to watch. The Eagles surprised me with their play as they finally got over the hump, and the Patriots are not surprising me with the way they are beating the Steelers right now. My prediction of a Pats-Falcons will be half correct, I think. Of course, as I’m typing this, the Steelers are driving to get back to within seven.

I heard a little while ago of the passing of Johnny Carson. When he was still doing his thing, I was more of a Letterman fan, but I did enjoy The Tonight Show, and he definitely pioneered the format that everyone now emulates. I’m not sure why, but it feels weird when the famous people that I can remember as always being there when I was growing up, start dying. It really makes you aware of your own age.
