Pretty busy weekend for us as we started out having dinner with family to celebrate my uncle’s birthday on Friday night. We went to Frankie’s, a local rib place. I love me some good BBQ.

Then on Saturday, I got up early to meet my Dad at our house to do some yard work. We did some preliminary planning and laid out some string to visualize what I want to do. It was pretty cold though so it wasn’t very pleasant, but it did finally start to warm up right as we were finishing…naturally.

Ran some errands on Saturday afternoon, and then we went to a hockey game with Greg (I posted a photo on the moblog). It was a pretty exciting game as it went to overtime, and the Admirals ended up scoring thirty seconds into the extra period. Woohoo! We finished the night off with a late dinner at Waterside.

Today, we got up to go to church, did our normal grocery shopping, and this afternoon, I watched some great basketball (March Madness about to begin, you know) while doing the fun task of balancing the finances.

Like I said, pretty busy weekend as there always seemed to be something to do. Now back to work. :(

I finally got my train up and running, after years of sitting in a broken-down box, season after season tucked away in an attic. I tried to get it working a couple of weeks ago. There engine would run, but the gears wouldn’t turn, so I dropped it off at a local train store to have it fixed.

Two weeks later, I’ve got a working model locomotive. The train itself is over thirty years old having initially belonged to my uncle, and I can remember putting it together with my dad twenty five years ago, so it has some sentimental value.

I like just sitting here and watching it go round and round. I’m not sure why, but trains are just cool.

We’re heading to a minor league baseball game tonight. I’ve been to a few Tides games in my life, but I haven’t been to one in quite a few years. Harbor Park is a really nice place to see a ball game…too bad Norfolk doesn’t stand a chance to get a major league franchise.

Monica’s mom came into town last night so we’ll get to take her along with us. When she’s not attending sporting events, she’ll be helping us unpack the rest of our belongings.

She came in via train to Newport News and then a short bus ride to Norfolk. For future reference, they don’t drop you off at the bus terminal so don’t bother getting directions to there like we did. They actually drop you off down the road at some random bus stop.

Wish we would have known that before hand.

Congratulations to Danny (one of Monica’s plethora of cousins) and Denise on their new baby boy, Jay!

As you can see, he’s very cute and very sleepy. I know how he feels.

I would like to congratulate my little cousin Danny and his wife Denise on the birth of their son, Jay. Jay was born February 20th in Puerto Rico. Danny and I are the youngest grandchildren and we always thought of ourselves as special and the babies of the family. My grandmother Julia now has 9 children, 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. We stopped being the little ones a VERY long time ago.

My mother, little Julia, is the only one of big Julia’s 9 children that doesn’t have any grandchildren and she mentions that from time to time. We assure her the day will come……..someday.

Brian finds it incredibly difficult to keep up with the size of my family and remember who everybody is. His comment of the latest addition was “wow, another one to keep track of”. I am going to have to create some type of family tree so that he can refer to it when I am mentioning someone in my family.

That’s going to be some tree!

So the Thanksgiving holiday weekend was alot of fun. We left our house at 5 am on Thursday morning and were able to miss the bulk of the traffic as we arrived about four and a half hours later at Julia’s house. We rested for awhile as Julia prepared the Thanksgiving meal.

With football on the TV (what else?), Julia and Monica were preparing the turkey, stuffing, and all of the usual Thanksgiving fare, as well as the holiday favorites of ambrosia and napa cabbage salad. The family started to arrive and we finally sat down to eat around 3 pm. We stuffed our faces and topped it all off with the usual pumpkin pie. It was a great meal!

On Friday, after recovering from the previous day’s gorging, we had leftovers, and then headed downtown to checkout some of the holiday festivities. We started out at Macy’s where we visited the “North Pole” and actually saw Santa.

Yes, Santa Claus! I never knew Santa had a New York accent.

After walking around Macy’s for awhile, we walked (in the rain) for awhile and eventually caught a cab up to Bloomingdale’s where we checked out their Christmas section (very nice!).

At this point, we were really hungry, so we headed over to a club called Swing 46 where we ate a great dinner and listened to some really good jazz. I highly recommend it!

On Saturday, it was another lazy day, but we did head back downtown in the evening to look at the wonderful store windows at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Sax Fifth Avenue, and Lord & Taylor. My favorite had to be the “A Christmas Story” theme at Macy’s. We also got to see the inside of St. Patrick’s Cathedral which was very pretty.

I even got to finally eat some fresh roasted chestnuts. Woohoo! Ask Monica how good they are. :)

To finish the evening, we stopped by a restaurant called the Jekyl & Hyde Pub to have some drinks and eat some food. It’s a great little place with a wonderful theme. I don’t want to spoil it for you so be sure to check it out if you’re in New York.

After the great time in New York, we once again got up very early and left the city around 7 am. We were able to miss most of the traffic (which was terrible later in the day), picked up Jack, and arrived home before 12:30 pm.

Thanks to Julia and Aramis for a great time!

It’s hard to believe that Monday is here again. This weekend, my mom, Julia, came to visit from NY, and it was great to have her around for a couple of days. We love to chat, shop, gossip and munch on some really good Puerto Rican food together. Brian likes my mom’s visits because she keeps me busy and he can watch all one hundred thousand hours of football without me disturbing him.

Thanks for the visit mom! We love you and can’t wait to see you again!

I left for Chicago last Thursday a little apprehensive as to what might happen at one of our most hectic meetings of the year. Although, the meeting was in fact really hectic and tiresome, I cannot believe everything that happened to everyone I know while I was away.

As soon as I get to Chicago, I get a phone call from Brian telling me that New York is without power and all I could think about was my brother. Fortunately for my mom, she was and still is in Puerto Rico, so she missed the whole thing. After a couple of hours of trying to reach my brother, he finally calls me and lets me know that he will be stuck at work and will sleep under his desk as he has no way of getting home. After this phone call, my mom calls to tell me that she is very worried about my brother and also told me that she had some kind of food poisoning and was more than sick. After this phone call from my mom, I get another phone call from Brian telling me that his dad needed emergency surgery and he was going home to be with him….at this point I had been gone for about 8 hours. I could not believe it!! Brian also hurt one of his knees and my friend Laura broke her nose in a Brady Bunch-like accident with a softball.

I am happy to report that my brother finally got home 30 hours later, my mom got over her food poisoning, Brian’s father is doing well, Brian’s knee is expected to be fine and Laura says that her nose is expected to make a full recovery.

I turn my back for a second and everything just goes all crazy! Lucky for all of you, I am back now. There is something to say about having me around.

Well, my weekend of home aloneness came to a screeching halt before it began. I received a call on Thursday evening that my Dad was in the hospital, and my mind frantically began thinking of what could have happened.

It turns out that during a visit for one minor problem, a smart doctor detected a symptom of another extremely serious problem that could have developed into a catastrophic ailment. In order to fix this problem, immediate surgery was required, so I raced out of here…for four hours…down to see my Dad in the hospital as he prepared for his surgery.

After a sometimes-emotional nine hours in the hospital, in which his surgery was delayed almost four hours, the ordeal was finally over. Now the recovery begins.

My Dad is home now and well on his way back to being 100%. Dad, I know the grass not being cut is really bugging you, but let it be, take it easy, and get well soon.

It’s times such as these that you really appreciate your loved ones.

We went up to Philadelphia on Saturday to visit some of Monica’s family: her uncle and his wife, her cousin and his wife and son, her second cousin, as well as her mom and brother.

It was a good visit as Monica hadn’t seen some of them in years, and they were meeting me for the first time. Of course, I’m so charismatic that they all liked me right way.

Here are some pictures from the day.
