Satellite vs Cable

We just had Directv installed, and I am already loving it. I’m currently watching the Hokies beat up on Miami (twenty more free throw attempts) on some sort of alternate Comcast Sports Net channel. I wouldn’t have been able to watch the game with Cox Cable.

The Hokies aside, we finally have high definition shows to watch on our HDTV. No HD locals yet (I’m working on getting one of these), but we do have ESPN HD, Discovery HD, and a handful of other HD channels. So far I’ve mostly watched ESPN HD, and I have one word for you – simply, totally awesome.

Some of the other HD channels have just been okay; I think they might upscale standard definition shows which, while they do look better than normal television, it’s just not high definiton. They do have Battlestar Galactica in HD though. :) Heck, even the State of the Union is in HD tonight.

Some of the shows on Discovery HD look absolutely stunning, but how long can you watch flowing streams and algae growing? Pretty long if it’s in HD, it turns out.

And to top it off, we’re paying less than we did for cable, and that was without high definition.

This and that

Things have been moving pretty quickly since the beginning of the year. It was really difficult getting back into the swing of things at work – very tough when you’ve been off a week and a half. I really enjoyed our time off, so it made it that much worse to have to go back to earning a paycheck.

Monica has started classes again (her last semester!) and is already hip deep in work. She’s already had her first test and has her hands full trying to balance her school work while volunteering at a local nursing home. I don’t know how she keeps things straight.

I’ve been fighting off some sort of cold or something the past couple of weeks. It kind of comes and goes – some days are better than others, but I think I’m finally starting to kick it.

We finally started to get some cold weather. I mean, what’s winter without temperatures below 50 degrees? It was starting to feel like Florida around here, but thank goodness it’s actually been cold enough for me to burn some fire wood lately.

We had to say goodbye to some good friends earlier this month. They took off for Texas for bigger and better things. We’ll really miss them, but we know they are following God’s plan, and we’ll keep them in our prayers.

Holiday Recap

I hadn’t posted much over the month of December so here’s what we did.

We started off riding in style while celebrating my Mom’s 60th birthday, and then made our our annual trip to DC to see an old friend and the usual Christmas decorations.

Then we went over to see my Dad and Marlene to celebrate Christmas before they set sail on a Christmas cruise.

At last, Christmas Day came and went, and then we headed to Williamsburg to see their old-fashioned decorations.

While we were there, we saw a wonderful concert where Dean Shostak played musical instruments made of glass (even a glass violin!).

Finally, we finished the year in style, dancing the night away with my Mom and Bill at a New Year’s Eve party.

Happy New Year

I guess it’s about time to wish everyone a happy new year so…Happy New Year!

I haven’t updated much lately because I was off the entire week after Christmas, and we spent much of the time relaxing and taking day trips. I received a ton of great gifts, and as always, everyone was extremely generous and I’m very grateful. Lately I’ve been playing with one of my Christmas presents just a tad. Yes, I have one now thanks to Monica and her family. Woohoo!

So that’s taking up much of my free time right now, especially this game, and I haven’t done much of anything else. I haven’t even posted any Christmas pictures yet, but I think I’ll do those tomorrow.

Update: photos have been added here, here, and here.
