Google Earth

I had heard about this a few days ago, but I just got around to downloading Google Earth.

Two words. Very freaking cool.

The detail level isn’t quite complete on our house, but we were able to find Monica’s family in New York right down to their building. That is simply amazing. I assume they’ll keep going until they can zoom down to any building in any city in the world.

How long before anyone can just check me out on my couch?

Foote’s Legacy

You might have heard lately of the passing of someone named Shelby Foote, and if you’ve ever watched Ken Burn’s epic The Civil War, you’ve no doubt seen him. I love that documentary because it just feeds my passion for history, and Shelby Foote’s commentary is a big reason I enjoy it so much. He just has a way of making things more interesting to listen to.

If you haven’t watched it before, be absolutely sure to catch it next time PBS runs it, or just go out and buy the DVD set already. I plan on rewatching it very soon.

I also just added Foote’s The Civil War: A Narrative to my wishlist. *hint* *hint*

The Prez gets emotional

I thought President Bush did a great job with his speech tonight. He spelled out the case for why we are fighting, and you could tell it was genuine and heartfelt, even down-right emotional. Of course, he’s not going to convince anyone on the looney left, but that’s not really what he was trying to do anyway. I really think he was just trying to make sure Americans aren’t being swayed by the avalanche of negative press, not only from this country, but worldwide. You can tell he meant what he said, and his message hasn’t changed since September 11, 2001.

Good News

Monica wanted me to share this bit of news regarding a little tidbit I found on vartv.com last week.

// Football net coming to Cox

Cox Communications Hampton Roads has announced that the National Football League’s NFL Network is coming to it’s Hampton Roads cable system. The net will be added to Cox’s Digital Cable Sports & Information Tier on channel 224 on July 14th….. (6/14/05)

She is so excited about it!

Reverse Redneck

For the first time since we moved back to this area, I’ve been to the beach. It really hasn’t changed.

We decided to get up early this morning, around 7 am, in order to head out to the beach before it got too crowded. We arrived a little around 8:30 am, and we had no trouble finding a place to park. I was actually surprised at the number of people already there, but there was plenty of space on the sand for our towels, and the weather was perfect. The sun was blazing, but there was a nice breeze so it didn’t seem hot at all.

On the way there, we picked up some of that new Coke Zero which I must say I like a lot. It’s way better than Diet Coke, and to me it just tastes like a less sweetened regular Coke.

I dozed for awhile on the beach while Monica read some magazines. A little before noon, we packed up for home as it was starting to get pretty hot, and we had baked long enough. I had put on the sunscreen so I was fairly sure I didn’t fry my skin. We headed home just in time to relax some more, and then wash the cars. I cooked out some leftover burgers from the DMB concert while we enjoyed some nice jazz music on the porch. Monica’s family even got to check us out on the webcam for a bit. :)

All in all, a pretty long but very enjoyable day, and now I’m beat. Turns out I’m pretty pink, but not really burned, except for a little spot on the front of my neck that I apparently missed with the sunscreen. Sort of like a reverse redneck.

One and a half days off

I took off a half day yesterday and all of today, and it’s been great. We went to the Dave Matthews concert last night (absolutely no political rants, thank goodness), and had a great time with Bucky, Steve, and Tanya. Before the show, we cooked out some grub on the grill and listened to some tunes in the backyard. Around 7:15 pm, we headed to the show, and made it there just in time for Dave to open with American Baby. There’s a couple of shots from the show on the moblog, including one that turned out to be somewhat artistic looking.

Today, Monica and I took it easy with one of those lazy summer days we all know and love. We picked up some slurpees at the local 7-11, a first for me in about ten years, and headed over to Mount Trashmore where we enjoyed a leisurely walk around the lake and park area. I even managed to take a couple more shots for the moblog there as well. Afterward, we headed to the mall where we did a bit of shopping, and then finished off the day with some great seafood.

The weather for my time off has just been gorgeous. Here’s hoping it stays that way for this weekend.

Back on that Horse

Okay, I think it’s about time I started posting again. It’s been a hectic few weeks around here to say the least.

Work was simply crazy for awhile with late nights aplently. Then we started having server trouble which led me to finally stop procrastinating on that OS upgrade I’d been planning for a long time. With that out of the way, some lovely spammers located my comment script and used it to their heart’s content. So then that made me start looking at upgrading our blogging software. I had been using movable type for a couple of years and was considering upgrading to the newest version which would have required me to actually pay some money.

Um…yeah.

Obviously, I was a little hesitant, but the comment spam was driving me nuts so I came this close to biting the bullet. That is, until I read this article.

So here I am blogging with wordpress, and I must say, it’s simply awesome. I have had almost no trouble setting up the software, and migrating the site was a breeze. I love the permalinks, and it’s amazing to not have to rebuild pages anymore. Movable Type, you were good for awhile, but WordPress is the real deal.

There are still a few things that need tweaking here and there, but most everything is where it should be now. I even added a few enhancements to the site, and I finally got the webcam working the way it should have been all along.

Just one more thing to say before I call it a night. I was installing the software this past Sunday so I didn’t get a chance to post a very important message.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Busy, Crazy, Lazy

That is how I describe our lives lately. We are sorry that we don’t update the web site very often, but we promise to get better at it soon. Brian the computer geek has been doing all kinds of nerdy things that I don’t understand to update the web site and make it better and more efficient.

The latest update is that everything is fine.

We hope to get back to normal soon.
