Autumn is really here. The temperature this morning was 49 degrees and the sun was no where to be seen at 6:30 am. As I put on my jacket, grabbed my coffee and opened the front door to leave, I found my friend Johnny blocking my path.
Johnny Cash (named by my friend Laura), is an all black cat who has decided to settle in the bushes right outside our home. He does not have any tags and is all skin and bones. I am not sure where he came from, but there is something about him that makes me happy. Since I am a sucker, I have been giving him food for the past couple of days. After he is done eating, he just sits and hangs out for awhile and we keep each other company.
I am not really looking to keep him as Brian would simply “die” from his allergies and I don’t think Jack would like a kitty friend, but he is fun to have around. An attempt was made by Laura to take him home, but her husband Mike refused. Apparently, four cats is his limit. My thinking is once you have four, what’s one more? (he, he)
My neighbor and I have agreed to join forces and find Johnny a good home before it gets too cold or something bad happens to him. Until then, he will have a friend in me.

It’s the first day of fall!
I’m starting to think this is my favorite season. I love the changing colors of the leaves as they turn nice shades of Hokie maroon and orange, and there’s plenty of football to watch while enjoying the crisp autumn nights.
It also means this year is flying by. What’s up with that?
Happy 1st birthday to the cutest girl in the world, Miss Katie Thies!!
It seems as if you just got here and we can’t believe you’re already driving….mommy crazy! We love you and see you soon.

So there’s a hurricane coming. Isabel. That’s a good-sounding hurricane name.
There was a hurricane last week or so called Henri. That doesn’t sound like a life-threatening storm at all…more like a chef at a snooty restaurant who has a big nose and loves to shout, “Sacre bleu!”. I don’t think any hurricanes should have french names.
So I think the folks down in Chesapeake are preparing for the worst (as are we)…gallons of water and oodles of canned goods. I hope the people down in the Outer Banks are doing the same as they usually bear the brunt of these monsters.
Here’s the stats on the storm as of this morning:

I lived through Gloria back in 1985, and the worst thing that happened was a bone-shaking crash as a tree fell on our house. Here’s hoping that’s still my worst hurricane memory after Isabel passes.
Keep safe everyone!
I’m not exactly sure what to put here today, the second anniversary of the most awful of days. I took some pictures from when Monica and I were in New York City for Thanksgiving in 2001.
We must never forget 9/11.
However painful it might be, we must relive the horrific images from that day, continue the fight against fundamentalist Islam that warped men’s minds into doing the unthinkable, and remember the heroes who ultimately turned a day of tragedy into a day to be proud to be an American.
* Note – Be sure to turn your speakers on . You will need the flash player for some of these sites. Some of the pages are rather large and will take a little while to load.
When you think of a redneck, one of the things that ultimately pops into your mind is NASCAR. Lots of guys racing around constantly making left turns.
Yeah, lots of excitement.
So with that mind, we ventured last Friday down to Richmond to see the NASCAR Busch Series Funai 250, and you know what? It was actually fun.
I never knew that NASCAR races were so loud that you needed to wear ear plugs. You can also rent headsets to listen to your favorite driver communicating with his pit crew all through the race. And you really don’t get an appreciation for how fast they are actually moving until you’re standing next to the track; you just don’t get that feeling on TV.
The most exciting part is the crashes and the ensuing race for first place that occurs after the yellow flag-waving is replaced with a green one. There was even a red flag that occured (which stops the race completely) due to a messy crash that occured about five laps before the end of the race, I assume so as not to end the race under a yellow flag (in which all drivers must drive slowly and maintain their position).
The last three laps were definitely the most thrilling as the first two cars bumped into each other producing alot of smoke (from the tires) and making everyone think that they were going to crash. The driver in third ended up rear-ending the driver in second which caused him to spin out. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but the driver in second surely thought so and drove up next to the other driver in the pit after the race to give him a piece of his mind.
So while we’re not exactly NASCAR fanatics now, we can certainly appreciate it as a sport and wouldn’t mind going to another race.
Monica’s family will be happy to know that she is the first Puerto Rican redneck.
…go out to our friends, Tanya, Mike, and Bucky.
Happy Birthday, guys!
(I know it’s not as big as Monica’s birthday wish, but she is my wife. :p)
